Updated: 08:43AM Wed, 23 Jun 2010

FORMER Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash is slated to perform at the Surf Beach in Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. The Slash Live Concert on Aug 5 is brought here by low-cost carrier Firefly.

According to Firefly Sdn Bhd marketing and communications head Angelina Fernandez, this will be the carrier’s first-ever concert in Kuala Lumpur and the first of many concerts organised to promote Malaysia.

“This concert will give Slash fans here and abroad the opportunity to watch their idol performing live as well as enjoy the many wonders of Malaysia,” said Angelina.

Slash (below) is acknowledged as one of the best guitarists around. He was ranked by Time Magazine as No.2 on its list of the 10 best electric guitar players of all time in August last year.

Born Saul Hudson, the 45-year-old is a British-born (naturalised American) musician who is best known as the former lead guitarist of the hard rock band, Guns N’ Roses, between 1985 and 1996.

After a falling-out with lead singer Axel Rose, Slash left the band to form the eponymous Slash’s Snakepit. He later co-founded another super band Velvet Revolver with his former bandmates Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.

He released his self-titled debut solo album in April this year.

Slash’s concert here will feature his own songs as well as tracks from Gun N’ Roses such as Sweet Child of Mine and Paradise City.

Firefly also plans to showcase local talents as opening acts. Guitarist Jaya Sepitar has already been confirmed for the Slash Live Concert while local singer Prema Yin might make the cut, according to concert promoter Wilson Teoh of Tangerine Dream.

Firefly has also scheduled special holiday packages for the Slash Live Concert which include hotel stays and concert tickets.

There are also special packages for fans who wish to book their flights on Malaysia Airlines flights coming through KLIA.

May 05, 2010 19:58 PM

DUBAI, May 5 (Bernama) — Firefly Holiday, billed as Malaysia’s first full-fledged travel portal now offering worldwide holiday packages with a do-it-yourself feature, was officially launched in conjunction with the ongoing Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2010 here Wednesday.

Doing the honours was Malaysian Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, who also launched the 1Malaysia holiday packages offered by Malaysia Airlines.

“Firefly Holiday is ideal for the general traveller as it offers convenience from time of booking to point of arrival at the preferred destination,” she said at the event held at the Malaysia pavilion.

For tour operators, it provides one touch point for all ground arrangements.

“In essence, they are the online local partner, hence the convenience extends not only to the travellers but also to agents,” Dr Ng said.

Since its inception in April 2008, Firefly Holiday has evolved from offering Malaysian and regional packages only, to more than 100 Malaysia Airlines destinations worldwide via its international holiday packages.

Firefly Holiday is a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines.

Firefly managing director Datuk Eddy Leong said: “We’ll be working aggressively with travel agents here at the ATM to partner with us and market Firefly Holiday to their customers.”

Since the commencement of its services into Singapore in July 2009, Firefly airline has since connected travellers from Singapore into various points of Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur via Subang, Terengganu, Ipoh and Kuantan.

Meanwhile, the “1Malaysia Summer Specials” are being offered by MASholidays, the travel arm of Malaysia Airlines.

The holiday packages start from as low as 2,446 dirhams (RM2,150) per person, inclusive of return economy class travel on Malaysia Airlines, four-day/three-night accommodation and daily breakfast.

The travel period is from now till July 31, 2010.

Merina Abu Tahir, Malaysia Airlines’ regional general manager for the Middle East, Africa and South America, said: “Customers have a choice of a wide array of destinations ranging from shopping in Kuala Lumpur to the sunny beaches of Penang and Langkawi as well as eco-tourism in Sabah and Sarawak.”

“For a wholesome experience of these destinations, customers can also choose from more than 55 optional tours available from as low as 41 dirhams (RM36) per person,” she added.

GLENEAGLES Hospital Kuala Lumpur, a private healthcare service provider, has roped in community airline Firefly and travel agent Holiday Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd to tap the anticipated influx of Singaporeans seeking medical treatment in Malaysia.

This follows the recent announcement of a new ruling by the Singaporean government that its provident fund contribution can be used for medical treatment abroad.

Gleneagles chief executive officer Amir Firdaus Abdullah said the introduction of the new package offered by Gleneagles and its partners, Firefly and Holiday Tours will help increase the number of patients from Singapore to its hospital in Jalan Ampang.

“Currently, we receive between 20 and 30 patients from Singapore a month,” he told a media conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said Gleneagles expects between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of its total number of patients for this year to comprise expatriates, especially Singaporeans.

“Currently, they (foreigners) contribute about 15 per cent to Gleneagles’ annual revenue,” he said.

Gleneagles yesterday signed a partnership agreement with Firefly and Holiday Tours to provide cost savings and coordinated medical travel for Singaporeans seeking treatment at the hospital.

On February 12, the Singapore Health Ministry had said that from March 1, its residents can use their Medisave, which is equivalent to Malaysia’s Account 2 in the Employees Provident Fund, to help pay for their hospitalisation abroad.

Gleneagles is among the 12 private healthcare providers in Malaysia that have been approved by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to provide treatment to its citizens and permanent residents.

To further enhance its treatment services, Amir said Gleneagles will also be signing a memorandum of understanding with Macquarie University, Australia to enable renowned surgeon, Dr Michael Morgan to work exclusively with it to provide high-end neorosurgical procedures.

As much as I love traveling to other countries, I still very much prefer to travel within Malaysia. In my opinion, Malaysians sometime overlook what we have on our own backyard and too often we make an assumption that we have seen it and done it all!

With the aim to revive the fun experience traveling in Malaysia, I am embarking on a series of local travel this year dubbed as “Azuan Explores the Backyard of Malaysia” series!

Kicking off the series is a 2 days 1 night trip to Johor Bahru (JB). JB may be relatively a small city compared to the busy KL city, but it’s bursting with history, attractions, good food and plenty ways for visitors of any age to get to know its charms and people. Below are just some of the things to do in JB for a travel experience you couldn’t have anywhere else.

After a comfortable 1-hour flight on board Firefly FY2141, I arrived at the Senai Airport, JB ready for my exploratory trip. Firefly has three daily flights to JB from Subang SkyPark.

The best way to explore JB and surrounding areas is to drive on your own, preferably with a local showing the way. Car rentals are available at the airport at an attractive rate. I was lucky enough to be able to convince my wife (who is originally from JB) and her family to be my tour guide in this exploratory trip.

Straight from the airport, we made our way to Desaru Beach, a beautiful tourist attraction located 98km north east of JB. While it may sound a bit far, the journey itself is a nice experience with the option of stopping at another attraction, the Kota Tinggi Waterfalls.

Kota Tinggi Waterfalls is a great place for family picnics! The waterfall, which is 36m high, originates from the top of Mount Panti. Try swimming at the base of the waterfall for a refreshing change from the hot weather. However the Kota Tinggi Waterfall was too crowded on this particular Saturday so I decided to continue my journey to Desaru.

After about a 90-minutes drive, we arrived in the quiet beach town of Desaru. This place used to be a very popular destination for tourists as well as locals. However over the years Desaru loses its charm mainly due to the accessibility factor.

It was just recently that many new developments have taken shape and Desaru is now set to regain its glory!

One of it is this all new refurbished, Lotus Desaru Resort.

An apartment beach resort with very affordable rates!

It was monsoon season so the sea was too rough for sports activities. The beauty about Desaru is that you can enjoy a resort with its own integrated water theme park! It was Saturday afternoon but there were not more than 15 visitors at the park.

I was a 10-year old kid on that day and had a bit too much fun!

We also had fun time having a nice picnic by the beach,

Right after that we were all set to explore the famous Johor Lama Fort and Fireflies.

Johor Lama first arose under the rule of Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah circa 1540. You will still be able to see remnants of the historical settlement, though not as impressive as it once must have been.

I was excited to witness a piece of Johor history!

Unfortunately, Mother Nature has a different plan. It rains so heavily that we have to just cancel off the plans and drive back to JB City. A real bummer as Johor Lama and Fireflies were the real reasons I made the trip all the way to Desaru. I will be back definitely!

(Photo courtesy of VirtualMalaysia.com)Luckily when we reached JB City, the rain stopped allowing me for a late-night supper at Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru. This place was built on 1 January 1994 following the declaration of Johor Bahru as a city.

Famous for its delicious ‘low-budget steamboat’.

After stuffing out with all the good food, I made my way to enjoy the nightlife in JB. Of course there are plenty cool clubs, karaoke outlets and bars with live bands in JB City but I was too tired for an active night. So I decided to just enjoy a breezy night walk at Danga Bay.

At 12 midnight, the place was very much alive. Aimed to be a “must-visit” site in Johor, Danga Bay is Malaysia’s premier waterfront city and the largest recreational park in the city of Johor Bahru.

International food joints, night bazaar, live bands, fun fair carnival. All here at Danga Bay.

Cruise ship dinner anyone?

Petting Zoo at 12 midnight? Only n Danga Bay!

In for a drink?

A refreshing night walk with nice night view.

I was hoping that luck was on my side when I decided to try these fun fair games.

The only thing I won was a lot of laughter from my wife and passersby. It was fun nevertheless.

By the time I reach my accommodation, it was 2am in the morning. A long and tiring day in JB! It was exciting although not being able to visit Johor Lama ancient sites and Fireflies in Desaru was a big letdown. Day 2 turned out to be a better day with visits to the Royal Museum and more interesting sights and food! Trip report and photos will be in part 2 coming soon!

After reading the article from Asian Geographic’s magazine- “I care because…” written by Irene Ang. (Acted as ‘Rosy’ in Phua Chu Kang) I’m sure a lot of you know her.

In her article, she told me the story of how she became a person who takes part in caring about the environment, on how the little things we can do as individuals, to save our big world.

There are many ways in which a person can contribute towards saving the environment. For me, the plastic bag is a big issue here in Malaysia and so I did my part in caring for the environment through these little steps.

Start from home
Firstly, I recycle plastic materials at home. Plastic bottles such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion and washing liquid bottle are segregated into a section. This section will be placed at the dustbin area for the garbage collectors to collect and recycle.

They may sell it to recycling centres or simply deliver it there.

Either way, it saves me the hassle of taking the recyclable material to the centre myself. Besides plastic, I can also sort out my rubbish into paper and glass. Newspapers, magazines and used printed papers can be recycled when the newspaper man come and collect them. In recycling, I get extra allowance as well!

Remember, you just need to separate your rubbish from the recyclable material so that the workers can sort it out easily.

It’s just that easy!

Recyclable bags
I’m sure most of you have one or two environmentally friendly bags at home.. Many companies have resorted to using these cute little bags when they give out goodies to their customers. These bags are not only cheap but functional such as serving me in the many of my little chores to the supermarket and even to work. I keep a few of these bags inside the car boot in case there’s any shopping or marketing to be done. So, instead of using plastic bags from the shop or supermarket, I use my own fashionable reusable eco-bag to store goods. Here’re some of mine that I have collected over the last few months during my duty travel. Below are 2 of my favourite eco-bags.

Work can be made fun
For work, I usually use this bag to store my food container. It is highly useful as it can be transformed into a usual bag to be carried around if you want to. It is also useful as it will not tear even if liquid was to leak from my container or water bottle. This is the bag which I use to keep my lunch.

This is a cute eco bag that I got from a travel fair. Looks lovely right? Fold it inside and it became a strawberry key-chain like item.

I’m also making the effort to recycle paper at work by not printing unnecessarily. I also use used paper by flipping it to the other side as sketch paper (normally used during brainstorming session). After that, the sketched papers are brought home to be recycled with the newspapers.

Fashionable at the same time
I’ve also since, started collecting recycling bags, as some of them are well-designed. They definitely ensure I remain fashionable even while using them at the supermarket or to work.

In Malaysia, we have designers like Carven Ong who designs eco friendly bags for Guardian Pharmacy. If you don’t already know, Carven Ong is Malaysia’s renowned fashion designer. His expertise is in designing exquisite elegant wedding gowns. But he does his part for the environment in his collection of eco friendly bags. Outside of Malaysia, we have Karl Lagerfeld, creative director for house of Chanel to create his own eco friendly bag. Being green is in indeed!

Today, Ikea has taken a big initiative in implementing this campaign to the public by charging RM0.20 for one plastic bag. Jusco supermarkets have also implemented a similar idea of not giving out plastic bag and pushes customers to purchase the Jusco’s eco friendly bag instead. Initially, both of these efforts are good to initiate a green-loving culture in Malaysia.

In other words, they are also educating Malaysia to care a little more about our environment as we are the only ones who have control over it.

It takes a little to achieve a lot. What we contribute now will have effect on our later generation. If everyone in Malaysia would just contribute just a little by all these small and simple steps that I have taken, Malaysia will be cutting the waste of plastic bags by half.

So, tell us why you care? The best written piece in less than 20 words wins a mystery gift from us. So, hurry up and submit your entries at the ‘comments’ column below.
